As I enjoy my time away in the Hamptons, Violet and I have been wandering the beach endlessly, as well as roaming the streets in the village, taking the time to shop, catch a bite, stock the fridge, etc. Every couple of days, we return home in time for a new guest to arrive; the excitement of new company is always the best part of the day. I of course have the room(s) ready with fresh linen, flowers and local magazines, but this year I offered an element of surprise–a wonderful, white, fluffy beach towel monogrammed with each guest’s full first name. Can you believe the local Bridgehampton Kmart (known to my friends here as K-MARt, of course) offers a huge collection of Lands End products–clothing, bedding, tote bags, sheets, and pillows–all of which can be personalized right on premises. I love anything that is personalized, don’t you?
Feeling excited for my guest to see their new towels, I certainly was not expecting to receive anything myself (although I do love a good host gift–and I have already received some very thoughtful things for myself and for Violet!). One houseguest has given me a gift that is personalized beyond the traditional lettering or initials: a magnificent watercolor painting of my home, Rosebrook Gardens! I was so touched and honored, shocked that he took the time to visit Westport first, take reference photos, and then spend 2 days sketching and then painting each detail. He painstakingly capturing my home, gardens, and outbuildings with the talented stroke of a brush.
So this houseguest’s touching gift will no do doubt be the gift that keeps on giving. Rosebrook Gardens continues to celebrate 16 years, and this week I celebrate with a painting that will forever represent this milestone.
Now that’s one houseguest that’s certainly no pest!
