Hello & Goodbye, Dolly!

What’s the greatest way to spend a Wednesday afternoon? A Broadway play matinée, of course!

This week, my MARtians, I journeyed into the city for a matinée to see the award-winning 1964 musical Hello Dolly, with the Divine Miss M herself, Bette Midler, at the Schubert Theater. It was a perfect sunny, warm day to travel into New York and MetroNorth was the perfect easy-in, easy-out way to get there and back.

To say it was ‘an experience’ is an understatement. Bette brought the character Dolly Gallagher Levi to a new level of enjoyment. Her comedic style and live stage experience and skills elevated every part of her performance.  The costumes and hats were classic and sophisticated with so much attention to detail: right down to the shoes–and you know I’m a shoe man. As for the set design? Well the moving train that came across the stage took our breath away! OMG how did they do that!

How do you top this? Well, Bernadette Peters joins the cast next week, bringing her own spin to the role. She is such a Broadway vet and superstar, “it’s so nice to have you back where you belong”. And so worthy of another visit. I can never get tired of live performances as every time you see it there are fun-to-spot nuances and changes depending on the audience, talent and in this case comedic timing.

So I say Hello Dolly and Goodbye to Bette, and soon Hello again as I’m sure Bernadette will be a smash, too!
